Artist Statement
Michael Lorenzana is a visual artist whose practice revolves around collage as a means of exploring composition, structure, and narrative potential. Deeply influenced by personal and collective memory, he integrates original photography with found and archival materials, assembling layered compositions that construct new meanings and evoke emotional depth. His work investigates the fragility and presence of images, reconfiguring them to offer alternative perspectives on history, identity, and emotional geography.

His process is rooted in a search for meaning through visual fragmentation, where he weaves together disparate elements to create intricate and immersive compositions. His background in musical composition and audiovisual media informs his approach, allowing him to play with rhythm, layering, and contrast in a way that generates unexpected narrative forms. By reinterpreting existing materials, he constructs emotionally engaging visual landscapes that challenge perception.
Beyond technique, Michael considers collage a means of navigating internal and external worlds, mapping the intersections of memory, emotion, and cultural representations. His engagement with the medium of the collage extends to its conceptual dimensions, investigating its potential as a research tool and expressive language. Through his work, he pushes the boundaries of collage, using it not only as a form of personal expression but also as a means of reimagining and reshaping the visual stories that define our collective experience.
